Teaching neurodiverse people to stuff their emotions because their emotions make others uncomfortable is abuse.
We should be teaching the multi ways available to express emotions, self advocacy then teaching emotional regulation or recognise the self regulation taking place.
Conditions like poor interoception and alexithymia are symptoms of Autism which can interrupt or delay the natural human being feelings process.
A neuroaffirming approach therefore asks:
“What is this expression communicating or helping the person regulate?”
rather than automatically asking:
“How do we stop this behaviour?”
And this is one reason the distinction between emotional expression and compliance training can be important in safeguarding.
